I was compelled to shoot this project in a somewhat sarcastic / ironic reaction to “conventional advertising wisdom” that says if we show people eating, it needs to be overly styled and overly precious. Guess what? Sometimes you get some hair in your mouth when eating licorice. Get over it. Eating is animal and funny and fun and it's not perfect.

The Cat House on the Kings is California's largest no-cage, no-kill, lifetime cat sanctuary and adoption center. Officer Dean Taw visits the sanctuary a few times a year to volunteer his time and energy. He grooms, cuddles and plays with the cats and kittens, scoops poop, cleans, sweeps, and mops, and in general ensures that the shelter is clean and the animals get all of the affection and socialization they need. Cats need attention and TLC - Officer Taw is a never ending well.

"Proclivity" is a tendency to choose or do something regularly. It's an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing. There are hobbyists, there are devotees, and then those who are a fusion of both. I'm most intrigued by the latter. One who fervently collects Star Wars figurines, frequently dresses up in a Stormtrooper uniform, and allows such a habit to freely spill into his personal life (and space) is high up on the list of scenarios I love to photograph.

America is host to countless sub-cultures. But only one generates more happiness than all the rest put together: Tiki Culture. Vintage Hawaiian shirts, sweet (and toxic) cocktails, steel guitars, and hand-carved totems fill people with joy.
